Taken to 45th Stationary Hospital and then via the 6th Hospital Train to the 24th Stationary Hospital. From there he was admitted to the New Zealand Aotea Convalescent Home. In October 1917 he strained his back carrying an 8-inch shell at Belah and developed a medical condition that plagued him until discharge as he was declared “no longer fit for military duties as a result of injury”. Discharged 20 March 1919. Ongokoreiti Teau/Atini Teauiti died of pneumonia 14 December 1919 only six months after his return from war service. He is buried in the Nikao cemetery in Rarotonga. He left behind his wife and four young children. His wife Ngatipi Teau Vaine was from the island of Aitutaki and she received her husband’s war medals 16 March 1930. Headstone records 'Aged 50' at the time of death however we do not believe this is correct.
