Employed by Union Steam Ship Company Ltd in Rarotonga. Had served in the New Zealand Territorial Force for 12 months before WW1 and discharged as not a New Zealander. Enlisted 1 July 1916 in Rarotonga. Promoted to Corporal in Narrow Neck Military Training Camp Auckland New Zealand. Upon disembarkation from the SS Malwa at Suez 27 December 1916 he was posted to the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Bde Training Regiment and Base Depot as a Quarter Master Sergeant. Served 22 January 1917 to 10 March 1917 as a Company Quarter Master with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and Base Depot. Promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 10 October 1917 and appointed Company Sergeant Major of the Rarotongan Company. As such he was the highest-ranked Native Cook Islander in WW1. Admitted sick to the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station at Jaffa 19 July 1918 and then to the 36th Stationary Hospital, Gaza. Returned to New Zealand on SS Malta from Egypt 14th of December 1918. Discharged 20 March 1919.
