1st and 2nd Rarotongan Contingent. Attached B Company 3rd Maori Reinforcements (Niue) 5 February 1916. On 13 July 1916 he returned to New Zealand with the repatriation of the Niuean Contingent and returned to Egypt 16 November 1916 with the 2nd Rarotongan Contingent. He was attached to 10th Heavy Battery Royal Artillery on 23 October 1917 to 9 November 1917 when a part of the Rarotongan Company assigned to assist the artillery at the 3rd Battle of Gaza. 12 April 1918 admitted to 77th Casualty Clearing Station ill with malaria. Promoted to Captain 1 August 1918 and posted as Second in Command of the Rarotongan Company. Returned to New Zealand 28 January 1919 on SS Malta. Mentioned in Despatches on 16/1/1918 for: "For distinguished service in connection with military operations under General Sir Edmund Allenby, GCMG, KCB, Commander-in-Chief, Egyptian Expeditionary Force." Discharged 7 March 1919.
