Enlisted 10 April 1916. Embarked for the United Kingdom with the 16th Reinforcements 19 August 1916 and proceeded to active service in France on 15 November 1916 as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. Transferred to the New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion 1 January 1918 and then detached to the Rarotongan Company. Embarked for Egypt 21 January 1918 and promoted to Lance Corporal June 1918. Between July and November held the temporary rank of Corporal. Became ill in Palestine November 1918 and was admitted to hospital, subsequently being evacuated to Egypt by sea and then to New Zealand, where he was finally discharged on 7 March 1919. His cause of death was classified by the War Pensions Board as attributable to illness contracted while on active service.
