Enlisted at Narrow Neck Camp 18 September 1916 and embarked at Wellington on HMNZT No.78 Navua on 2 January 1917 to disembark at Devonport, UK on 27 March 1917. Left for France 13 June 1917 and posted to New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 6 July 1917. Detached to the Rarotongan Company 14 January 1918 and embarked for Egypt at Marseille on 21 January 1918 and arrived Alexandria 4 February 1918. Posted to Rarotongan Company 15 February 1918. Admitted to 34th Casualty Clearing Station, Haifa, with severe malaria and then to 69th General Hospital Balah where he was discharged 22 January 1919. Invalidated to New Zealand on SS Kaikoura from Suez 6 March 1919. Discharged 29 August 1919.
