Enlisted in Rarotonga 1 July 1916. Disembarked SS Malwa in Suez 27 December 1916 and posted to Training Units and Depots at Moascar. Admitted to the 26th Stationary Hospital 30 July, discharged for duty 5 February 1917. Marched out to Kantara 7 April 1917. Posted to Rarotongan Company and was appointed Temp Corporal 'In the Field' 1 September 1917. Admitted to hospital 26 October 1917. Reported dangerously ill with pneumonia 28 October 1917 at the 43rd Stationary Hospital, Egypt.
Died of double pneumonia 29 October 1917 and buried at Kantara War Cemetery with Chaplain W. R. Stewart officiating.
Cook Islands Roll of Honour Board records name as 'K. Ngaio' (incorrect spelling).
Listed on the Atiu cenotaph as 'Lance Corporal NGAIA KAPAO'.
