Enlisted 1 July 1916 in Rarotonga. Promoted to Lance Corporal at Narrow Neck Military Training Camp Auckland New Zealand 30 July 1916 and promoted to Sergeant 27 August 1916. Disembarked at Suez ex SS Malwa 27 December 1916 and posted to New Zealand Mounted Rifle Bde Training Regiment and Base Depot. Marched out to El Arish 22 January 1917. Marched out to Kantara 10 March 1917. Posted to the Rarotongan Company 18 March 1917. Admitted to Hospital “in the field” 30 August 1917. Relinquished T/Sgt 31 August 1917 and appointed Company Quarter Master Sergeant 10 October 1917. Embarked for New Zealand per SS Malta 14 December 1918 and discharged 20 March 1919.
His name on the Cook Islands Roll of Honour board RSA Nikao Rarotonga and on his military headstone is recorded as 'R.M. KEA.
