Enlisted in Rarotonga 27 August 1915. Embarked for France from Egypt 9 April 1916 as part of the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion. Admitted to the 12th Casualty Clearing Station from 19 April 1916 to 28 April 1916. Admitted to the 1st New Zealand Field Ambulance 15 December 1916 and to the 14th General Hospital 16 December 1916 with severe pneumonia. Transferred to the United Kingdom by Hospital Ship 5 January 1917 and admitted to the New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst until 13 February 1917 when he was transferred to the New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch 13 February 1917. He was employed at Hornchurch until 14 February 1918 when he was transferred to the New Zealand Engineer Reserve Depot at Christchurch, United Kingdom. Returned to France 7 May 1918 and was transferred to 3rd New Zealand Depot Unit of Supply at Marseille 20 May 1918 and embarked for Egypt on SS Canberra 5 June 1918. He was sentenced to 28 days Field Punishment No.2 on 24 June 1918 for creating a disturbance and striking a non-commissioned officer and served this at the Detention Compound, Ismailia. On 30 July 1918 he was posted to the Rarotongan Company. On 6 October 1918 he was admitted to 110th Field Ambulance with malaria and transferred to 36th Stationary Hospital and on 12 October 1918 transferred by hospital train and admitted to 27th General Hospital, Gaza. Admitted to Aotea Convalescent Home at Heliopolis 12 October 1918 to 18 October 1918. Embarked for New Zealand on SS Malta 14 December 1918. Discharged 20 March 1919 and returned to Tahiti.
