Enlisted 30 September 1915 in Rarotonga and arrived in New Zealand for training 7 October 1915. Disembarked at Suez ex SS Navua 15 March 1916. Posted to the New Zealand Maori Pioneer Battalion and served in France. On 13 January 1917, he was evacuated to the New Zealand hospital ship Marama departing the United Kingdom 13 January 1917. Died 3 April 1917 in Auckland Hospital of stomach cancer and is buried at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.
Cook Islands Roll of Honour board at RSA Nikao Rarotonga records his name as 'LCpl S. POKIPOKI'.
