Attested 1 July 1916 in Rarotonga. Disembarked at Suez ex. SS Malwa 27 December 1916. Posted to the Rarotongan Company 4 April 1917. Admitted to hospitals with various ailments from 27 July 1917 to 14 October 1918. Embarked for New Zealand per SS Malta 14 December 1918, became sick and was admitted to Ship’s Hospital 7 January 1919. Off-loaded at Fremantle, Australia to quarantine and receive medical treatment. Returned to New Zealand via Sydney. Discharged 5 August 1919.
His military headstone is located at the Ivirua CICC cemetery along with others whose burial location is unknown. We re-lettered these headstones in October 2018.
The service number 84556 on this headstone is incorrect and belongs to Private Mitiakarere PE. The correct service number is 19261. The date of death on the headstone (07/01/1956) is also incorrect.
