On enlistment 20 October 1914, he was employed in Whanganui, New Zealand and was married with one child. His father Kora from the island of Aitutaki was listed as his next of kin on his service records. Member of the New Zealand Native Contingent in Malta 5 June 1915. Embarked for Gallipoli 30 June 1915. Admitted to a hospital in Mudros 5 October 1915 with typhoid. Evacuated by hospital ship to England Hospital Birmingham 5 December 1915 before being transferred to the 4th London General Hospital. Assessed as unfit due to sickness and returned to New Zealand via New Zealand Hospital Ship Maheno 28 October 1916. Wounded in action although location and date not specified. On 16 January 1917 had a shell splinter removed from his left knee in Whanganui Hospital, New Zealand. Discharged in New Zealand 26 March 1917 as no longer fit due to illness.
