At time of enlistment, he was living in Rarotonga and employed as a purser in the Union Steam Ship Company Ltd.
Enlisted 15 February 1915 at Trentham Camp. Posted to Brigade Headquarters New Zealand Mounted Rifles at Mudros 4 October 1915 and disembarked at Alexandra from Gallipoli 25 December 1915. Transferred to New Zealand Field Artillery at Moascar 8 March 1916 and embarked for France 7 April 1916. Injured by a horse in Havre 23 April 1916 and evacuated to Victoria Hospital and then to Walton-on-Thames 30 June 1916. Returned to France and on 29 March 1917 and posted to 9th Battery New Zealand Field Artillery. Wounded 14 September 1918 in gas attack and evacuated to 1st New Zealand Field Ambulance and then to the 16th General Hospital on 16 September 1918 and discharged 28 September 1918 to rejoin his Battery on 17 October 1918. Embarked for New Zealand 6 March 1919 and discharged 13 May 1919.
Returned to the Cook Islands 7 July 1919.
