On enlistment was a Government Official in the Cook Islands Administration on Mauke Island. Previously served in the 17th Ruahine Regiment Territorial Force from 1911 until 1913 and returned to New Zealand to enlist on 4 January 1915. In Egypt was on the staff of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and appointed Adjutant of the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 6 March 1916 and embarked for France 9 April 1916. Evacuated sick to the United Kingdom on Hospital Ship Brighton 29 August 1916 and discharged from hospital 6 October 1916. Embarked for New Zealand on New Zealand Hospital Ship Maheno 19 December 1916. Discharged 24 March 1917 to return to Mauke Island Cook Islands. Awarded a MiD (Mentioned in Despatches) in General Sir John Maxwell's Despatches 16 March 1916, supplement to London Gazette 21 June 1916. In 1920 he was the Resident Agent in Aitutaki and served with the 2nd Battalion Wellington Regiment, Territorial Force, until 1922.
