Pte. William CAFFERY 12/4148 was born in Auckland, New Zealand and was a descendant of Tepaeru PAKIRI of Titikaveka, Rarotonga, Cook Islands. He was a resident of the island of Mangaia, Cook Islands circa 1909 where he lived with his wife and two children.
Embarked from Wellington 2 April 1916 and arrived Suez 3 May 1916 before embarking for France 10 May 1916. Killed in action “In the Field”, France, and reported missing 30 September 1916. On the 20 December 1916 a Court of Enquiry confirmed that he was “missing, believed killed in action on 30 September 1916.”
Named on the New Zealand Memorial, Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, France.
