British forces; with New South Wales Lancers for 7 years; and with Waimarino Mounted Rifles in New Zealand for 2 years. WIA (Wounded In Action) 19 April 17 with a GSW (Gun Shot Wound) to the chest and again on 25 November 1917 with a GSW to the right hand at Gaza. After he recovered he was posted to the Rarotongan Company 26 January 1918. On 19 May 1918 he was admitted to hospital until 22 June 1918 and then transferred to the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Bde Training Regiment & Base Depot. He was then posted as second in command of a squadron in the Auckland Mounted Rifles and in June 1919 was promoted to the Officer Commanding of the Squadron. He embarked for New Zealand in July 1919. He was awarded a MiD (Mentioned in Despatches) on 5/6/1919 (London Gazette 12 January 1920, p508). Disembarked from SS Navua at Suez 15 March 1916 and embarked for France with the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 9 April 1916. Apparently identified as a Niuean as he was transferred to England with this contingent and disembarked from SS Arawa in New Zealand 14 July 1916. He reported for duty at Narrow Neck Camp 25 September 1916 and then embarked at Auckland on SS Tofua 14 October 1916 to arrive in Plymouth, United Kingdom 29 December 1916. He left for France 1 February 1918 and arrived in the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 28 March 1917. He was transferred from New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 14 January 1918 to Egypt sailing from France 21 January 1918 and joined the Rarotongan Company 5 March 1918. He was admitted to 44th Stationary Hospital 31 July 1918 with malaria and rejoined the Rarotongan Company 20 September 1918. Returned on SS Malta however became ill en route and was off-loaded for medical treatment at Fremantle, Australia, in January 1919. Arrived in New Zealand May 1919 and returned to Tonga. He suffered 10 further outbreaks of malaria and returned to New Zealand for treatment. Admitted to the Narrow Neck Military Hospital, Auckland 10 December 1919 for treatment for malaria that he had contracted in Palestine. He was discharged for hospital 3 February 1920 and given a 50% pension for 3 months. Served in the Tongan Defence Force in WWII. They were sent to join the Niueans and Cook Islanders already in training and sailed with them in February 1916 as part of the 3rd Maori Reinforcements. They served in Egypt and France before returning to New Zealand with the Niueans in mid-1916. The Legers were now added to the 9th Maori Reinforcements and returned to France in October 1916 to serve in the Pioneer Battalion. In January 1918 the brothers were among the Pacific Islanders from the Pioneer Battalion sent from France to join the Rarotongan Company in Palestine.
